About the Venue
The Smugglers Cott sits in the heart of Looe, in southeast Cornwall, and operates as a family owned restaurant.
Smugglers is a combination of historic buildings, now joined together. The main original building dated from 1420 is Grade 2 listed. The Merchants House, where the main restaurant floor is found, was built around 1590 using oak Timbers salvaged from the wrecked Spanish Armada ships.
The Smugglers is so named because of the old hidden stone staircase and the discovery of a Smuggling Tunnel which lead towards the quayside and under the old market. The tunnel, on its route to the 'quayside', is rumoured to have once connected to Osborne House, a former inn, found in Lower Chapel Street - and perhaps The Fishermans Arms, although this is unconfirmed.
During renovations in 1932, part of the Cellar was discovered to be 'partitioned off' with a false wall. When removed, the old tunnel was discovered, leading from the small hidden room and passage out towards the quay.
In 1990 master Carpenter Ivor Toms was undertaking refurbishment work at the restaurant and confirmed the story. Ivor lived in part of the Smugglers building from the late 1920's to the mid 1930's when he was a small boy and remembered well the workmen breaking through the false wall.
